CROSSFIRE Capt. Thomas Forsyth's tour in Afghanistan - and likely his military career - is cut brutally short when he's badly wounded by a roadside bomb. Facing six months of recuperation leave, Tom returns to his childhood home, where his mother, the "First Lady" of racing, is a horse trainer. He's never seen eye to eye with her, so he doesn't expect a hero's welcome - but even he's not prepared for the receptions that awaits him.
When his mother's prize horse finished third in a race it should have won, Tom discovers the training business faces a threat far more dangerous than a run of bad form. Soon Tom finds himself on a very different, but just as deadly, battlefield, where his military skills are tested in a ruthless game of kill or be killed.
