An exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2001 reunited many of the objects that once stood on the high altar of Basel Cathedral. Although not a comprehensive catalogue of all objects, this book contains more than 75 examples, each discussed and photographed, introduced by four essays on the history of Basel, the contruction of the Cathedral, the formation of the Treasury, its dissolution and eventual reconstitution. The objects date from the 11th to 16th century and include gold reliquary crosses, chalices, caskets, textiles, Eucharistic vessels and many other sumptuous pieces.
